When we advocate we speak truth to power. We- whether as individuals or groups- seek to influence change in our communities, to ensure the best political, economic and social decisions are made. To do this, we must first find the truth. Hence advocacy research is imperative for effective advocacy; it is necessary to unearth, assemble and use information to back up the arguments we make as advocate and gain support from the public and policy-makers. In line with this, Betterment Briefs- our advocacy research consultancy was established as the unit through which Better Breed Cameroon engages in advocacy research either on our own or upon hire to assist in advocacy and development efforts in Cameroon.
This unit is comprised of young Cameroonian researchers who are; well-trained (academically and through practical experience) in a variety of research methods, accustomed to undertaking research in our diverse context, and above all dedicated to unearthing reliable evidence to guide advocacy, development practice and policy construction for a better Cameroon

Cameroonian writer, youth worker, and researcher of gender and education for development
Dr Monique Kwachou is a Cameroonian writer, youth worker, and researcher of gender and education for development. She holds a dual honors BSc. in Gender Studies and Sociology from the University of Buea, an M.A in Education, Gender and International Development from UCL Institute of Education, London and PhD in development studies from the University of the Free State South Africa. Monique’s research generally centers African feminisms, the engendering of education, critical pedagogy for the improvement of education quality/outcomes, and youth development. She has over 8 years of professional experience working with higher education institutions and civil society organizations.
Cameroonian political scientist and feminist studies researcher
Dr Larissa Kojoué is a Cameroonian political scientist and feminist studies researcher with several years of practical experience as a consultant on advocacy and Human rights projects in West and Central Africa. Larissa has in-depth experience of a variety of quantitative methodologies and statistical analysis using STATA and SPSS. She equally offers the team her unique perspective as a LGBTQ advocate and her access to a rich network of French Cameroon and Central African feminist organizers. Larissa has been Program Consultant at the 13th International AWID Forum in Bahia, Brazil (2016) and research consultant for the Queer African Youth Network (2016). Larissa obtained her PhD in Political science at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Bordeaux (France) and returned to Cameroon in early 2020 to assume a position of assistant lecturer of political science at the University of Buea.
Communication specialist and scholar of multidisciplinary public health
Nchafack Almighty Nkengateh is a communication specialist and scholar of multidisciplinary public health with over 10 years’ combined progressive experience in corporate communication, community engagement, social marketing and health communication with international and local non-profits in Cameroon and the UK.
She holds a B.Sc. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Buea, Cameroon and an M.A in Public Health from Nottingham Trent University, UK where she is currently rounding up studies for a Ph.D. in Multidisciplinary Public Health. As a researcher, Almighty is particularly interested in digitally-mediated research methods, knowledge translation, and research communication. Aside from this, Almighty brings to the table entrepreneurial expertise as Founder of Just Food- an enterprise that produces healthy and convenient ready-to-cook traditional African food.
Agricultural and environmental economist
Dr. Yong Sebastian Nyam is an agricultural and environmental economist. He is a systems thinker with an interest in understanding and managing the complex and long-term sustainability of coupled social-economic-environmental systems. His research is focused on designing decision support tools in the form of models that can assist decision-makers to evaluate the impact of different scenarios or policies in an uncertain global future. Using systems thinking tools and system dynamics modeling, he has engaged stakeholders at different levels in a participatory approach to develop formal system-based models to achieve sustainability outcomes. His focus is to create a nexus between water, land, and food systems as they relate to sustainable development. He is equally focused on understanding how communities can build resilience to different hazards using holistic disaster risk assessment tools. He has authored and co-authored research in productivity and technical efficiency in agricultural production, agricultural water management, food security, disaster risk reduction using applied system dynamics and systems thinking, climate change adaptation strategies, disaster risk assessment, and impact assessment. He is a consultant working in the Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience and Land Global Practice. His work will focus on urban resilience projects especially urban food systems and disaster risk assessment in Eastern and Southern African countries. Yong is also a researcher in the Disaster Management Training and Education Center for Africa (DiMTEC) at the University of the Free State, South Africa. Yong holds a PhD in Disaster Management at the University of the Free State, South Africa, a Masters in Agricultural Economics at the same institution, and a Bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of Buea, Cameroon.
Health promotor and student researcher in Global Health for Development.
Carlson Nkwain is a health promotor and student researcher in Global Health for Development. He holds a BSc. in Biochemistry from the Catholic University of Cameroon (CATUC) Bamenda and a MSc. in Global Health from the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) of Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Carl is currently studying for a PhD in Global Health at QMU’s Institute for Global Health and Development. Carl advocates for national development through community and youth development. He is interested in Civic Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship as tools for national development for the youths.
Development Economist with an interest in Program/Policy Design, Implementation, Evaluation and Big data Analysis
Melissa Simo is a Development Economist with an interest in Program/Policy Design, Implementation, Evaluation and Big data Analysis. She is a Fulbright grantee and an Alumni of the Centre for Development Economics USA where she graduated with an M.A in Policy Economics (Honors). She was admitted into this program in the Best Liberal Arts college in the USA as the first female Cameroonian in 60 years of the program’s existence and the youngest candidate, 2020.
Melissa is enthusiastic about development and policy, and she is committed to informing policy using evidence and top edge research. She believes the height of development is seen in a change in lifestyles and the freedom to be one’s best self and so she uses societal tools like education to ensure all have an opportunity to participate in building the economy and understand their choices.
Cameroonian researcher, writer and journalist
Kwoh Elonge is a Cameroonian researcher, writer and journalist. He holds a BSc. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Buea, an Msc in Sociology, and another Msc in Journalism and Mass Communication, from the University of Buea. He is currently completing a PhD in Educational Psychology.
His core area of interest is in research that bridges communication and educational policy for youth empowerment.
