Better Breed Cameroon is thrilled to announce the launch of the 10th edition of the Sama Randy Youth Write Contest. This annual essay competition honours the memory of Sama Randy, a founding member of Better Breed Cameroon, by encouraging undergraduate students across Cameroon to engage in thought-provoking discourse and develop their writing as a tool for activism.
About the Theme
This year’s theme, “My Vision 2035: The Cameroon I Imagine,” was proposed by Umel Awountsa, a 2022
contest winner and voted most popular by the Better Breed Cameroon community. As we are exactly a decade away from 2035, this theme is a timely invitation to young Cameroonians to reflect on their government’s Vision 2035 strategy, which was adopted with the goal of Cameroon becoming an emerging economy by 2035. With this theme, we are asking contestants to review this strategic plan and then either express their thoughts on the progress thus far, re-imagine the vision and articulate their aspirations for a prosperous and developed Cameroon, propose innovative, youth-driven
solutions for furthering the vision or offering solutions to current challenges. In all, the theme aligns with Better Breed Cameroon’s mission to centre young people in nation-building and highlight the potential and proven strength of youth in shaping the country’s future.
Submission Details
Eligibility: Open to all undergraduate students, including those in diploma programs, nationwide.
Essay Guidelines: Essays must be written in English or French and fall between 1000–1500 words in length.
Submission: Submissions are only accepted via email to betterbreed@gmail.com and/or admin@betterbreedcameroon.com. The email should state the subject as: 2025 Sama Randy Youth Write Contest Submission. The candidate’s entry should be made as an MS Word or PDF attachment to the email. The body of the email must include the participant’s name, contact number, age, degree program, and higher institution.
Entry timeline: Submissions are welcome as of 1st January 2025 and close on 31st March 2025.
Prizes: Better Breed Cameroon is offering the following cash prizes to the top three winners in each language category:
1st Prize: 100,000 XAF
2nd Prize: 50,000 XAF
3rd Prize: 25,000 XAF
Essays will be evaluated on originality, clarity of argument, spelling, grammar, and adherence to submission guidelines. Winners will be announced within three weeks of the submission deadline and celebrated in a public award ceremony.
